Welcome to the UK! HOST hopes that you will really enjoy your stay in this country.
You will be busy now with a lot of different things to think about – finding your way around the university and the city; starting work; making new friends – and getting used to the British weather! Perhaps you are feeling a little homesick, or having a few difficulties with the language. This happens to almost every international student.
HOST is here for you, to help you feel more ‘at home’ in this country. Our friendly hosts are waiting to welcome you to their homes for a short visit. Spending a day or a weekend with a host family can make a big difference when you are new in the UK. You will learn a lot by taking part in our way of life, and your hosts will be interested in you, so you will not feel so far from home.
HOST would love to make the introductions!
We are always looking for more volunteer hosts all over the country. Helping a student from another country to feel welcome is not just ‘a kind thing to do’. It is fun to share our way of life for a day or two, see ourselves with other eyes, explain the peculiarities of the English language, and the oddness of some of our customs.
We can also have our eyes opened and our interest in other countries and cultures fuelled by really getting to know someone from another part of the world. Hosting an international student is a brilliant way for children to learn, and is stimulating company for slightly older hosts too, as well as an excuse for a bit of sight-seeing in our own areas.
HOST promotes international friendship and understanding by arranging for international students at British universities to meet UK residents in their homes.
