International Students and UK Hosts Welcome to HOST

Christmas with HOST

HOSTS - we have many students hoping to spend Christmas in someone's home. Please contact HOST now if you could offer an invitation. Thank you!

The Big Give Christmas Challenge

Please give to enable more opportunities for friendship and mutual understanding between Muslim students and UK residents.

husna Abidin 31116.jpgHusna Z Abidin wrote after her HOST visit in November 2015:

'Thank you very much to all the people involved in making the HOST experience a great one. I am a Muslim and all the negative stereotypes of us in the media made me really worried of how accepting people would be. But that all proved wrong as my host family were such accepting and knowledgeable people. I felt really welcomed and I enjoyed learning about the British culture and history. I also enjoyed the religious discussions which gave me and my host family a better understanding of each other.'

This year, HOST is participating in the Big Give Christmas Challenge to help welcome students from the Middle East to British homes. For every donation made by a supporter, the Big Give matches the amount, which means that your donation is worth twice as much.

But there’s a catch! The Big Give does not have enough money to fund all charities taking part in the Christmas Challenge, so we are asking you and your networks to donate online at MIDDAY on the 4TH AND 5TH OF DECEMBER. Match funding is available on a first-come-first-serve basis, so the closer after midday on 4th December 2015 you donate, the more likely HOST will hit its target.

Why we are fundraising

HOST is raising money to help more Middle Eastern students, including those from Egypt, Iraq, and Syria, be welcomed into a British home. In the present climate of mutual distrust, enabling more Middle Eastern students to take advantage of the HOST programme will encourage friendship and cultural exchange and foster mutual understanding and appreciation.

HOST visits are provided free of charge by volunteer hosts, but HOST has to charge an administration fee. We are aware that the relatively low take-up by students from the Middle East is due to their inability to afford the application fee and we currently have no sponsors offering to support the applications of students from that part of the world. Your donation, doubled by the Christmas Challenge, will help provided free visits for 50 students from Middle Eastern countries.
