HOST UK promotes international friendship and understanding by arranging for international students studying in the UK to spend a day, weekend or Christmas in a British home with volunteer hosts.
New Year Honour
We are delighted to announce that Margaret Stevens has been awarded the British Empire Medal ‘for services to international students in the UK.’
Margaret first became the Regional Organiser for HOST in Cornwall in 1990. Since then she has also looked after many other regions on a temporary basis. Over the past 24 years she has arranged invitations for a few thousand students.
For the last 17 years Margaret has also been HOST’s Public Relations Officer, amongst other things helping to recruit 100’s of hosts.
The BEM was revived in the Queen’s Jubilee year, to honour those who have made a sustained contribution in the voluntary sector. ‘I am very pleased,’ says Margaret, ‘that the citation on this award includes the words ‘Volunteer Regional Organiser, HOST’—this is recognition for the work we do.’
Recent host gathering in North Wales
There were plenty of students at the recent gathering for hosts in North Wales.
|Jing Wang, our new Regional Organiser for Oxfordshire, made good use of her Notebook when meeting some of her hosts at a tea party in the garden of Margaret and Neil Hancox.|
|Jing said afterwards:'I am so touched that everyone has some amazing story to tell about a hosting experience. I am quite sure I have made the right choice to volunteer for HOST.'|
